Simply Pinks and Blues

So I've just missed out on completing my February Goal for a lovely year of finishes - literally by a couple of hours. The 1st of March New Zealand time is still 28th February for a lot of countries in particular the UK and the US. Not to worry, I can still share this finish with the March edition of A Lovely Year of Finishes!

Linking up with the Small Blog Meet over at Lily's Quilts and A Lovely Year of Finishes over at Fiber of All Sorts and Sew BitterSweet Designs.

Here's February's completed project....

I have struggled to come up with a name for this quilt over the last month, and have resorted to calling it the King-sized Bed Quilt. However I have now decided to call this one Simply Pinks and Blues - because one feature that I really love about this quilt is how simple it is, and I would have to say for all its simplicity, that it is the backing of which I love most about this quilt. Enjoy the photo's....

Simply Pinks and Blues
I roughly calculated the size of this quilt before sending this off to Sue B for quilting, and I calculated approx 95" by 105". However I was told last night by Sue that the Quilt is actually 110" by 113" - so this really is a gigantic quilt - although that is what was recipient has requested!

What has been the biggest quilt you've worked on to date?

A third of the quilt is hanging over the back of this fence!

Close up on one of the rows
The fabric is a mixture of fabrics from Barbara Jones' range (Dots in Red), Dear Stellar House Designer's Cleo range (Cleo in Sand, Bargello in Sand, and Cleo Chevron in Sand), and the blues are from the Kokka range.

Another close up
Keeping with the simple theme, I asked Sue B to quilt a simple meandering  pattern , and once again she has done a superb job!
A small section of the binding
I used the left over fabric for the binding... I just had enough to complete the quilt. I love this section of the binding - the pink part is a real standout feature of the binding, and work's nicely with the Pink star on the backing.

My favourite part of the quilt, the backing
It is a little overcast this morning so in a lot of these photo's, I've had to reduce the brightness and boost the contrast to bring out the colours. Whilst the photo's give the impression that it's hard to make out the dotted star, to the naked eye it is quite clear.

So simple!
So onto my goal for March (A Lovely Year of Finishes). I will stick to just the one goal this month, given the frenetic pace of February, and that will be to fully complete the Scrappy Speckle Quilt. I mentioned in my previous post that I have completed 6 out of 25 blocks for this quilt, so I still have a bit of work to do on this quilt, and each block surprisingly, takes several hours to complete.

Here's another project that I've just started, the Tokyo Subway Map Quilt. This one is a bit of fun, and I've completed 2 blocks (out of 25) to date, and about to start on the third.

  11. Beautiful quilt, really just lovely!

I want to make a REALLY big quilt, but I just haven't gotten the nerve to. The biggest quilt I have ever pieced and quilted (by machine) is about full size... My project for March is a Queen Size quilt we shall see how it goes. I still haven't decided how I will quilt it after I machine piece it.

  13. LOvely quilt! I made a king size quilt last year ( Denyse's Single Girl pattern in Liberty scraps, whats not to like?) but it's languishing unfinished in a cupboard, I got stuck at the basting stage by lack of floor space, think i need to take a leaf out of your book and send it off for someone else to quilt/measure!

  14. Your Scrappy Speckle project is simply lovely. And it looks like a great deal of work. I can't wait to see it come together.

  15. You are a quilting machine! What a lot you accomplish. I like the star backs, esp. the light one that is hiding. Your tiptoeing triangles are fun, too. Who gives a f*** about goals, don't let it make you crazy. Us retired grannies don't have as much going on as you.

  16. I love the back too - that dotted star is genius. And I haven't seen a Tokyo Subway quilt that I didn't like. Might have to go on my to-do list.

  17. Tokyo Subway brings back memories of making that quilt - best of luck with 2 down. Scrappy Speckle will be worth all the hours, really striking design.
