Baby Quilt for a Boy

Linking up with '2013 - A Lovely Year of Finishes' with Fiber of All Sorts

This is a small project I have been working on over the past two days, as you may have heard about from my previous Sun-Drenched Saturday post. When I bought the New Fire fat eighths bundle from Oakshott Fabrics, I also purchase some blues at a ridiculous price with the intention to do a give away at some point. In the end I decided to use the fabric for a simple baby quilt that I had in mind (boys of course). No real inspiration on this one except for keeping things simple but modern for the front - for the backing, I wanted to practice a simple skyline design which funnily enough reminds me of the Wellington skyline, in particular the harbour which boasts lovely clear (blue/green) water.

Using the iPad, 'Paper' app to draft up the front and the backing. My sketching skills are not awesome but you can see how easy this app is to use especially for drafting up Quilt ideas.

Here is an example of a good sketch using the Paper app. This is one of my flatmate's sketches. He has kindly allowed me to use one of his sketches on my blog - he also has his own blog - Republic of Colour - check out some of his work!

So here is the progress on the Front. I wanted to keep things as simple as possible given I had limited fabric to use and because I wanted this quilt top to fit well under the Modern Quilt tag.

Now to start on the backing... I banged this part out in no time which was a pleasant surpirse - and I didn't feel as though I rushed, I pinned well and the outcome, bar a few imperfections was pretty good. I had to use my awesome maths skills (as a banker should have - I don't really) to work out the the shapes and sizes of the skyline with my limited remaining fabric.

This wont make much sense - basically each colour had 60" left, I needed to break this up into one large, one medium and two smaller skyscrapers (using percentages).

Completed backing, Thanks to Marlon for doing an excellent job of holding this out for me

There is no recipient for this quilt, but it is very nice to have a baby quilt waiting in the wings - should one of my friends (you know who you are :)) decide to have a baby.

Some questions... How should I quilt this bearing in mind that I want to keep in simple and modern? I was thinking of a meandering pattern but will that work with the backing fabric? Also I want to be able to hide the piecing lines on the backing as much as possible. Your thoughts would be highly appreciated!

Goal Setting. I will come back with something a bit more concrete in my next post, but my two main goals are to have a minimum of one quilt completed per month. And secondly, to ensure each quilt is treated with utmost precision (no cutting corners which I have been guilty of I the past). Bare with me whilst I sort out my goals, I only came across this link up yesterday, so a little unprepared.

Thanks for visiting!

  1. What about an all over square geometric meandering design - interlocking boxes - would be suitable for both front and back

  4. I think I even like the back better than the front. I've found that when there are a lot of straight lines in a quilt, curved piecing really enhances things. When I saw your backing, it reminded me of a city in reflection, so perhaps some wavy lines in sky and "water"? And some straight lines in the "buildings"? But, of course, you might not see it that way at all!
